Diminishing her physical size and the opacity of her form, she became as the shadow of a fly. Entering the throne room via the hole in the ceiling, she flitted past the guards and into the portal. The once vibrant points of light that inhabited the vortex were not to be seen, and this filled Faemydi with a loneliness that she had not known in centuries. She was slaying all that she loved. Worse, she was discovering new worlds and new loved ones to kill. The universe would have fared better without her help.
With a pathetic puff of air, she slid into the Hymenopteran world. The mauve sky and subdued grounds reflected the hopelessness she felt. Looking at the Hive, she saw a swarm of Hymenopterans approaching the vortex. At least twenty stood guard in a circle around it.
Moving swiftly, she intercepted the swarm to discover the reason for its approach. Thousands of beings flew in a dark sphere. Darting between arms and staves, Faemydi met the nucleus of this living orb. It was the Empress Jennybee, being escorted across the land to this new portal to another realm. The Empress was clothed in an elaborate robe made of butterfly wings. She held a staff with what appeared to be the hollowed exoskeleton of some other species of giant insect. The empty glassy eyes reflected the thousand beating wings that surrounded them.
Coldly, the Empress glanced directly at Faemydi. The little faerie was still but a shadow, but still this incredible royal figure had penetrated her disguise. Listening to her mind, Faemydi saw that the Empress intended to take the newly discovered realm of the Pimi-Mele as she had done to so many before. Locked in the gaze of this powerful being, Faemydi forgot herself and cast a minor spell of hesitation. She wished to make the queen rethink her plans, that this new nation may pose an unseen threat. A sick twisting occurred inside her soul and she saw no change in the Queen's eyes.
From the vortex came a pitiful whine as from a choir of children mourning their parents. The spell lanced through the vortex, seeking its target, the target of the Mrough. In the realm of the Pimi-Mele, Nii was planning a quick and forceful strike against the throne room, to destabilize the vortex and sever the connection between worlds. From out of the portal came the spell of hesitation. It crossed the woods at the speed of thought and gripped Nii with a sudden sense of foreboding about the Hymenopterans. What unseen powers may they possess? Surely, it would be better to surrender and hope they are permitted to live their lives as before than to risk what destruction their wrath may bring. Nii announced that the Hymenopterans would not be opposed and that all citizens facilitate their actions.
Faemydi followed the Empress through the vortex. When she arrived, she saw what had become of her spell. Every Pimi-Mele was being rounded up and sorted into workers and useless persons. Nii met with Empress Jennybee and welcomed her curtly, but civilly. The tall magestic Hymenopteran grinned, she knew that this conquest would be by far the most profitable yet.
Days passed and Faemydi watched from the shadows of trees and rocks. Many guards patrolled the realm and over a hundred Pimi-Mele, skilled in the magical arts, were taken out through the portal. The others, either too old or unskilled, were relegated to growing food, much of which was not edible by the Pimi-Mele, only the Hymenopterans. Most horrific of all, though, was when Faemydi watched as Nii followed the Queen's order to increase the size of the portal. With the knowledge and power of the Pimi-Mele, Nii tore the vortex open ten-fold. The energy blast destroyed the throne room, set ablaze the nearby trees, and evacuated a fearful crater in the ground.
From then on, the Hymenopteran guards arrived by the hundred in order to secure the services of the Pimi-Mele of other nations. Nii instructed them on where other villages and towns existed and the swarm would leave, returning later that day or the next with a twenty to fifty Pimi-Mele. Collars were put around their necks and rope attached to each collar. The Pimi-Mele were being enslaved.
Weeping bitterly at her gross error, Faemydi could think of no way to aid this helpless people. Every ability she had could be turned against her by the Mrough. Everything she did hurt them. By her efforts these people were exposed to the Hymenopterans. By her efforts their retaliation was stayed. By her efforts they would perish.
